Ethical Issues

  • "Robots are hazardous equipment, and it takes expertize to run them and maintain them. If robotics are trusted to do all the complicated tasks in life, then eventually people will stop learning how to do them". (Citation 54)
  • Trust- can you really trust a robot in a life threatening situation?
  • Are robotics reliable? People can think under unpredictable and stressful situations, but robots can't; robots can only follow the directions/instructions tha are assigned to them.

Legal Issues

  • Medical Liability: What is something goes wrong? Who will be responsible: the surgeon and people that help perform the surgery, or the producer of the product?(Citation 55)
  • Training: "special training and experience along with high quality assessment are required in order to provide normal conscientious care
    and state-of-the-art treatment"
    (Citation 56)

Technical Issues

"From the moment the care of the patient begins, there are a number of technical issues that will be faced. For example, during the surgery the use of a large robotic device makes access to the patient difficult. It will be important to have all monitors and safety devices in place well in advance. It will be difficult to change positions once the surgery has begun.  Patient positioning will also have to be done very carefully to prevent any chance of injury from pressure points". (Citation 57)

Safety Issues

"There have been some safety concerns that the robot would go 'out of control,' meaning that the machine itself would act independently of the surgeon and that is incorrect. For example, the da Vinci system is a surgeon directed robot, so all movements are initiated by the surgeon. The only injuries that can occur using this technique would be if the surgeon incorrectly applies the instruments to a certain part of the body. If the machine were to break down, the robotic platform can mechanically come to a halt. The safety features of the machine allow it to stop so it cannot be used any further. In those cases most hospitals have additional machines available, or the case can be completed laparoscopically or open, if the surgeon has those skill sets". (Citation 58)
